Registered Nurse (RN)- Surgical Services

Department: Health Services
Location: Columbus, OH

Provides patient care, excluding physical exams, as a health care team member in a clinic setting, while maintaining and monitoring accurate medical systems regarding patient care and ensuring patient satisfaction and promoting clinic success.  Supports the revenue cycle through accurately and effectively documenting procedures and medications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • In accordance with PPGOH medical protocols, completes appropriate review of medical history and physical assessment, promptly reporting abnormal findings to clinician.
  • Admits and releases patients from recovery room.  Educates patients on their chosen method of contraception and aftercare instructions.
  • Completes appropriate sedation assessment, starts peripheral IVs, administers moderate sedation as directed by the clinician, and monitors sedated patients intra-operatively.
  • Coordinates surgical patient flow taking into account the physician on duty and available staff.
  • Maintains inventory, supplies and equipment for abortion services including emergency supplies and equipment.
  • Willing and able to maintain ACLS certification and respond appropriately to medical emergencies, in accordance with PPGOH Medical Standards and Guidelines.
  • Assists Charge Clinician and Practice Manager in assuring the abortion services comply with Quality Assurance, Regulatory (ODH, CLIA, PPFA), and OSHA requirements.  Maintains surgical services lab and patient logs.  Coordinates audits, necessary patient follow-up, and completes necessary surgical service reports.
  • Available to carry pager, receiving after-hours emergency calls from abortion service patients, documenting follow-up care on patients after hours
  • Gives injections, i.e. DMPA, and therapeutic medication as ordered by the clinician. 
  • Performs all necessary lab services including venipuncture.
  • Competently performs duties as Sedation and Recovery Nurse.
  • Promotes and maintains communication with patients, peers, clinic manager, clinicians, and administration.
  • Participates as a team player and promotes team building

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

LEVEL THREE:  B.S./B.A. from an accredited school of nursing plus minimum of 4 years related experience in OB/GYN preferred; health center experience helpful.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

LEVEL TWO:  Strong spoken and written communication skills.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Mental capacity to continuously use interpersonal and teamwork skills, discretion, be flexible depending on staff and client needs. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

LEVEL ONE:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

LEVEL THREE: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current Ohio nursing license required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Job involves evening and weekend hours, early morning meetings, contact with hazardous materials, frequent interruptions, and may occasionally involve travel to multiple sites.  May require on-call status.  Work takes place in a clinic environment.
