Staff Physician- Abortion and Surgical Services Director

Act as part of the medical services team providing abortion and gynecological re as outlined in PPGOH protocols for practice and policies and procedures for first and second trimester abortions as trained and privileged.  Provide direct abortion services according to PPFA Medical Standards and Guidelines. Staff Physician participates in accomplishing customer-focused goals as well as expense management policies and procedures to help support revenue cycle goals. Consults with Chief Medical Officer to ensure compliance with guidelines. Participates in Risk and Quality Management program, clinician meetings and other agency and center meetings as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.


  • Responsible for participating in overall quality assurance activities, assessing, planning and administering abortion care which is individualized to the client, and consistent with the policies and protocols of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio.
  • Review the agency’s complication statistics quarterly, review changes in policies and procedures in Abortion Services as they become effective and review quality assurance audits related to Abortion Services.
  • Reviews & interprets the medical and social history of reproductive health clients.
  • Demonstrates the necessary sensitivity and ability to function with the surgical team and communication with the client
  • Review gross examination of fetal material
  • Order Rhogam or Microgam  Rh negative clients
  • Complete and sign  abortion records
  • Must remain in the surgical facility until all patients have completed recovery room care
  • May refuse to perform an abortion for any patient based on his/her medical judgment.  The reason for not terminating the pregnancy must be documented in the patient’s chart
  • Interprets laboratory data, orders additional laboratory investigations when indicated and ensures appropriate follow-up.
  • Performs appropriate medical management of surgical complications related to abortion and other ambulatory procedures, as is privileged in such areas.
  • Provides ultrasound for gestational age estimates and medication abortion follow-up.
  • Acts as a medical consultant to clinic staff.
  • Provides expanded gynecological services as privileged.
  • Manages emergency situations in the center.

Is compliant with OSHA, CLIA and State Board of Pharmacy procedures, policies and regulations.

  • Participates in after hours on-call system, as needed.
  • Punctual response to work schedule required.  Replacements are not acceptable without approval of the VP of Medical Affairs.
  • Participates in staff meetings relating to center management and provides staff training in current medical procedures which are relevant to reproductive health.
  • May act as a preceptor
  • Serves as Abortion Director overseeing abortion services and privileging new providers.
  • Capable of being privileged to provide abortion services up to affiliate limit (19w6d)
  • Capable of being privileged to administer digoxin (intravaginally or transabdominally) for patients over 17w 6 days aain compliance with State of Ohio requirements.
  • Serves as Director of Analgesia and Sedation
  • Serves as Ultrasound Director, completing all required ultrasound trainings in the
    • Privilege Ultrasound providers per M S & G.
  • Serves as LEEP and Colposcopy Director managing the program and providing services to patients as needed.
    • Privilege LEEP and Colposcopy providers per MS & G




Provide direction to other physicians on site.

A board eligible or certified OB/GYN or Family physician or a Resident (3rd or 4th year) in OB/GYN or Family specialty training and must have had previous documented experience in termination of first and second trimester abortions.  Must be licensed and in good standing to practice medicine in the State of Ohio.  Excellent communication skills.



Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations



Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables



A board eligible or certified OB/GYN or Family Medicine

Current Ohio Medical License

Valid Driver’s License and automobile insurance in accordance with agency liability policy

DEA Certificate



Desired but not required:

CPR/ BLS Certification

ACLS Certification
